The sounds of moving water … more varied than you imagine. Compelling. The tinkle of trickling streams joining a river. Excitable swirls and eddies burbling downstream. Pebbles being rolled against one another, almost musical in the sounds they add to the symphony playing while the swaying, dipping, rustling trees conduct the melody. A xylophone-like rhythm. In the background, the thunder of water cascading from height; the crushing weight of the torrent thumping against the surface of the pool below. As you walk closer, emerging from the depths of the woodland, a roar assails you. It confronts you; impressive in its unbridled power; a clear warning. Be careful; I am mightier than you imagine. And yet … and yet … beguiling, tempting. The stillness of the surrounding pool draws you in; all too alluring. The mystery of its darkness is both warning … and invitation. The first chill as your toes dip; ice-cold fingers wrapping around you, caressing. You recoil from the cold but you are attracted to its power. Still, the thundering drum roll around the gorge … echoes of Orff’s Carmina Burana. Seductively, the gentle babbling of lesser flows draws you in. See (those trickles seem to say) we mean you no harm. Come on in; share a moment. The stilted laughter of your nervous adventurous companions is lost in the background noise as the thunderous cacophony takes centre stage. The maelstrom stirs the soul but leaves you quaking in your swim shoes. Is that a ripple of anticipation or the shivering chills of fear and a sense of your limits? It is time to push beyond them; time to play your own watery solo; it is time to join nature’s orchestra.
