Hope Shines Brightest

Me, Dad and my younger brother on Nanna’s doorstep

Dark times touch us all; for some they are brief encounters and for others one storm subsides as the next one rolls in. Finding hope in these dark times can feel impossible but it can also be when hope shines the brightest.

Hope was not always easy for me to discover. Hope would hide and wait for me while I searched for it, but it was always there.

There were times when I would become frantic if I felt that hope was lost. My body filled with anxiety, a momentary panic while I searched a little harder looking for the light. The nights when I laid my head convinced that hope had turned out the light were the most difficult to bear, but sleep brings magical things.

Did hope return while I slept or was it the sleep that brought a renewed energy to return to my search?

Hope, just out of reach like the promised gold at the end of a rainbow, pulling my beaten soul to get up and keep going for one more time.

The surrounding darkness would become broken by the tiniest shard of light. As if hope was fighting to get in, to reach me and to pick me up once more. My search for hope anchored me in the darkest of storms, holding on as tightly as I could for one more day, one more step.

The light brings hope that this storm will come to pass. The light of hope grows until you see both the light and the darkness together and you realise that the one cannot truly exist without the other. It is the darkness that makes the light so beautiful.

If hope feels lost please keep looking, it is there, shining, waiting for you to discover its hiding place.
